미국 Qualcomm사의 Corporate Research and Development (CRD – 주 연구소) Sr. Staff Engineer & Manager로 일하면서 3GPP에서 3G WCDMA4G LTE 시스템의 Radio Network ArchitectureProtocol 표준화 일을 해오신 송오석 박사를 초빙하여 Mobile Broadband System 표준개발에 관한 폭넓은 경험담과 전망에 대해 듣고자 세미나를 개최합니다.  

송오석 박사는 최근 Qualcomm사의 Strategic IP Group으로 자리를 옮겼는데, 이동통신 표준 개발에 관한 이야기 뿐만 아니라 미국 회사의 지적재산권에 관한 전략과 시각도 들어볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것 같습니다. (질의 시간에)

 

 – Title : 3GPP story for mobile broadband; how it has evolved and where it is heading

– Abstract : This talk will introduce the history of 3G and 4G technologies with a focus on history of 3GPP and the outlook of the future of mobile broadband.

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations for standardization of 3G and 4G cellular technologies. From Release 99, where the basic of WCDMA was defined, to recent development of Rel-12 for LTE-Advanced, 3GPP has lead technical advancement to realize mobile broadband systems.

The talk will include interesting stories of the first hand experience of the presenter, who has been an active contributor in various working groups of 3GPP. The presenter also will share his experience about joining an international firm as a research engineer from Korea.

– Speaker : Osok Song received a B.S. and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. He joined Samsung Electronics in 2003 and has been involved in 3GPP standardization. He was serving as the vice chairman of the 3GPP SA2, the working group responsible for 3GPP network architecture. Since April 2007, He has joined Qualcomm Incorporated, and worked on various aspects of next generation mobile communication with LTE and LTE-Advanced, including; System Architecture Evolution (SAE), 3GPP-WLAN interworking (I-WLAN), E-UTRAN, Femto cell, Self Organizing Network (SON), enhanced Inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC), and LTE-Direct communication etc. He has been an active participant to various working groups in the 3GPP, including SA2, CT1, RAN3 and RAN2, contributing radio network architecture and protocols for LTE and LTE advnaced.  He is currently at the Strategic IP team at Qualcomm. He is (co)-inventor of 90+ patents filed to the US.
