■ 초록: 지리통계학과 딥러닝을 활용한 겨울철 교통 안전성 및 모빌리티 개선 기술 연구
지능형 교통 시스템(ITS)은 현대 교통공학의 중요한 기술이며 특히 겨울철 기상 조건이 혹독한 추운 지역에서 교통안전과 이동성을 개선하는 데 중요한 영향을 미친다. 동절기 ITS 시설인 도로기상관측망(RWIS)은 겨울철의 도로를 유지하고 관리하는 방법을 결정하여 지원, 이를 용이하게 하기 위하여 전 세계적으로 많은 도로에 대표적으로 사용되고 있는 시스템이다. 그러나 이를 설치하고 운영하는 데 많은 비용이 소요되기 때문에 관측망의 구현 및 활용이 제한되고 있는 실정이다. 또한, 관측소 간의 공간적 간격으로 인하여 효율적인 전체 모니터링 및 추정 능력을 저하시키기에 공간추정의 필요성이 제기된다. 본 발표에서는 지리통계학과 딥러닝을 기반한 방법론을 이용한 관측망의 위치 최적화와 겨울철 도로 날씨와 노면 상태를 추정하는 방법론을 북미 지역의 사례를 통해 설명하자고 한다. 본 발표에서 제시된 방법론과 결과는 교통시스템 전반에 걸쳐 겨울철 기상상황이 가지는 부정적인 영향을 완화하는 데 도움이 될 것으로 예상된다. 이로 인해 모든 도로 이용자들은 개선된 안전성, 모빌리티 및 환경 지속 가능한 교통 시스템의 혜택을 누릴 수 있게 될 것으로 판단된다.
Advancing Winter Transportation Safety and Mobility using Geostatistics and Deep Learning
Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is an important part of modern transportation engineering and has a significant impact on improving traffic safety and mobility, particularly for cold regions that experience severe winter weather conditions. To help support and facilitate winter maintenance decisions, an advanced highway ITS monitoring technology; namely, Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) has been deployed throughout many road networks around the world. However, despite their importance, the deployment is often limited due to its high installation and perpetual operating costs. Likewise, the existence of large spatial gaps between RWIS stations further hinders its full monitoring and estimation capabilities. In this seminar, I will introduce a hybrid methodological framework that combines geostatistics and deep learning to optimize RWIS networks and infer winter road surface conditions using North American case studies. The methodologies and findings presented in this seminar will help mitigate the negative impacts of winter weather upon the vast transportation systems in Canada and abroad as they seek to benefit all road users with improved safety, mobility and a more environmentally sustainable transportation system.
