5. Abstract: Achieving carbon neutrality in transport requires different strategies for each sector. Light-duty vehicles are rapidly electrifying. Heavy-duty trucks, ocean-going vessels, and aircraft, however, will continue to rely on combustion-based power because of their demands for high energy density, long range, and existing infrastructure. The key challenge is therefore to use carbon-neutral fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and synthetic e-fuels, cleanly and efficiently across these applications. This talk examines the main technical issues in each domain. On the ground, these include hydrogen mixture formation and abnormal combustion. At sea, they include the stability of dual-fuel and ammonia combustion and the control of NOx, and N₂O. In the air, they include fuel flexibility and hybrid-electric architectures for small gas turbines and unmanned aerial vehicles. An integrated approach combining optical diagnostics, high-fidelity CFD, system-level simulation, and machine-learning surrogate models is presented as a means to understand these processes and accelerate development. Life-cycle energy assessment provides a realistic comparison of competing pathways.
